James J. Waring, M.D. History of Medicine and Health Sciences Collection and Rare Materials Collection
The library's historical collections, the Waring Collection consists of ca. 6,000 modern works on all aspects of the history of medicine and related fields, plus works on medical topics published between 1876 and 1913 that do not require the special handling of rare materials. Items in the Circulating Collection are shelved in the Special Collections Room on the third floor of the library. They are available any time the library is open, and most of them may be checked out.
The Rare Materials Collection is comprised of items that because of age, value, or rarity require special handling and security. It consists mainly of books and journals, a small collection of photographs related to the history of the university and the medical campus, and a small collection of medical artifacts, a wide range of objects dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. Rare materials are housed in a secure temperature- and humidity-controlled area, which is not open for browsing. All materials must be requested individually. They are available for use in the third-floor Rare Materials Office by appointment only.
